Looks: Nephthys didn't have many different looks. She was generally pictured with a basket on her long flowing dark hair. Her skin was an olive tone. On the majority of her pictures she wore a simple dress, and not very much jewelry. Sometimes she had bracelets on. Very similar in appearance to her sister Isis, they were thought of as twins. Nephthys was occasionally shown with big gold laced wings very similar to Isis's. Her statues seemed to have an emotionless face, almost bored. She was always posed like she was waiting on somebody. Nephthys was shown holding items of stature like crooks, crosses, and pikes.
Significance: Her part in Egyptian mythology lied beside Set, her husband. She was also a god of the dead, similar to her whole family. Nephthys role isn't as clean cut as the rest of her family. Some think of her as the God of the Deserts edge, or the Nurse God. She was also known as the God of Mourning. After Set killed Osiris, Nephthys ran from Set out of fear for her life. Her role In the Osiris assassination only came about after Osiris's parts were strewn around the world. She helped her sister Isis find, and assemble the pieces. In this time Nephthys helped Isis mourn the death of Osiris. After this it was a tradition that all people should mourn for loved ones they lost. When Horus was born Isis was thought of as the birth mother, and Nephthys was the nursing mother. It was from this contact with Horus that she is sometimes seen as the mother of him instead of Isis. Nephthys was known for having a very unique personality. She was married to the god of evil, so she had a mean streak in her. She was often recorded killing thousands of her enemies with a single blow of her fire breath. She was grateful for the acceptance into the family of Osiris, but was jealous of her sister Isis. Nephthys true love was for her other brother Osiris, and Isis was married to him. Being the "Nurse God" Nephthys wanted her own child. Her husband Set was thought to be infertile, so she was very unhappy. This also played into why she left Set; some believe it was because he was infertile, not because he was evil. In her desire for her own child a story told of her dressing up as Isis, to trick Osiris in having a baby with her. There is another variation of this story that says that Nephthys dressed up as Isis to tempt her own husband Set, into giving her a child, and Osiris unknowingly took Nephthys thinker she was Isis. Also, some believed Nephthys got Osiris drunk and drew him into her arms, while he was unaware of it.
Family: Nephthys was the daughter of Geb and Nut. She had brothers Osiris and Set, and a sister Isis. Her husband was the god Set, she left him when was overcome by evil. She had a son Anubis, his father is either Set, or Osiris. Isis and Nephthys were thought of as twins, because their similar appearance, and depictions on statues and tablets. However, actually bloodline information of this is not known.
