Looks: Thoth had three main forms. The first, and most recognizable, was that of an Ibis-headed man. An Ibis is a type of long legged, curved beaked bird. They have a long head and neck, indented eyes, and their beak is extremely long, with a slight downward curve. In this form Thoth was shown writing, or etching tablets. He was also regularly holding scrolls or types of parchment. His face would be that of the white Ibis, with black hair. The second most popular representation was that of a whole Ibis. This representation was mainly seen in statue form, with a large headdress. Sometimes he would be shown with a headdress of a sun disk resting upon two prongs. The last form was that of a baboon, with a large crescent moon on top of his head. This form was commonly seen in conjunction with Ra's passage to the underworld during the times of the night.
Significance: Thoth was thought to be the inventor of voice and the written language. He was known as the divine keeper and archiver of all history. Thoth had absolute knowledge of all arts and sciences including arithmetic, surveying, geography, astronomy, soothsaying, magic, medicine, surgery, music, drawing, and writing. He was the prime being responsible for creating the will of the dying. He was included in the resurrection of Osiris, and was responsible for documenting the event. Thoth was seen by many as a healer, spitting, and rubbing ointments to cure wounds. Thoth was the one who repaired Horus's eye after he battled his uncle Set. When Horus and Set were summoned to appear in front of the tribunal of the gods, in Hermopolis, Thoth was titled "The one to judge the two companions". Thoth was the inventor and teacher of the hieroglyphics language. Thoth was said to have a vault of all his teachings and writings. In this vault were all the magical formulas to control all the elements in our world. He was the first known magician, and therefore had many disciples. Most of his students said they knew of this vault, and they tried deciphering the coded books, however no one was successful. After his long reign over magic, he thought it was time to move on to the immortal land. He was put in charge of protecting "Aah-te-Huti" the moon. It was at this time that Thoth tricked the moon in giving him seventy seconds, and in this time he created the five intercalary days. It was also Thoth's job to escort Horus on his journey after every 12 hours of daylight, so the nighttime could come. "Ra has spoke, Thoth has written, and we read"
Family: In ancient books of the pyramids Thoth is known as the oldest son of Ra. He is also written as the child of Geb and Net. The brother of Isis, Set, Nephthys, and depending on who you ask Osiris. Normally Thoth is not associated with the Osiris family, some people think the word for family doesn't have the same meaning as our word for "family".
